What Started Drahcir's Slaughter?

Many writers and YouTubers in the creative writing field warn that a beginner's first work should never be finished. The reasoning? The drastic improvements you make along the way can often impede you from completing that initial project. In my humble opinion, there’s a lot of truth to that.

Drahcir's Slaughter #1 Cover.

The story of Drahcir’s Slaughter follows, who would've guessed it, Drahcir—a wicked wizard who has stolen a kingdom. Driven by his fears of an imminent invasion, he believes the only answer is to raise an army for his warpath. Drahcir has wronged many, leading to the formation of an Off-Fit Fellowship. No matter the cost, these outcasts are determined to get their revenge.

Ryan The Revolver by Jack!

This story has seen plenty of stops and starts. It was one of the original launch titles of my previous comic company, Theme Attics Comics, and with the fresh start of Alternity Comics, I wanted to revisit Drahcir’s Slaughter and prove those writers and YouTubers wrong. Initially, it was a crude tale, with a narrative that was all over the place. As a new writer, I had so many plots I wanted to introduce, but resolutions were happening too quickly. I was three issues into Drahcir’s Slaughter when I looked back and realized I’d only completed about 30% of the story. There was so much more potential to explore the character dynamics. Honestly, I ended up quitting Drahcir’s Slaughter because of that flaw.

The Vigiler from Drahcir’s Slaughter #1 (2024)

Years have passed, and I’ve finally built up the courage to complete Drahcir’s Slaughter. One character introduced was the Vigiler. I had a whole backstory planned out: he was a man who trained a young Drahcir and, begrudgingly, became a hitman for him. I even had a unique power system in mind! But in my rush to finish Drahcir’s Slaughter, I discarded all that backstory and his exciting powers for a gag kill just to showcase how cool Ryan the Revolver is.

The lesson I’ve learned from creating Drahcir’s Slaughter is that a young author can indeed create a first story they can be proud of. It’s important to let the story breathe. The beauty of comics, especially in the indie space, is that we aren’t bound by a budget or a strict timeline. We can take a fight that could be resolved in five panels and stretch it into five pages, letting our imagination run wild.

Drahcir’s Slaughter #1 is already available on alternitycomics.com for the lowly price of $1.99 (for digital copies only). The physical comic will be featured in our magazine, creatively titled Alternity Magazine.
